Global Press Institute

The Global Press Institute, formerly the Press Institute for Women in the Developing World, is a San Francisco-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit with international operations in 26 countries. GPI was founded on the premise that, with appropriate training, local women in developing countries can become quality journalists. It identifies the social, historical and political context that these women possess as a factor distinguishing them from traditional foreign correspondents.〔http://www.ventures-africa.com/2012/09/ideas-that-change-the-world-exclusive-interview-with-cristi-hegranes-global-press-institute/〕〔http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2011/05/3-non-profits-train-foreign-journalists-to-boost-global-coverage136〕〔http://www.findtofund.com/global-press-institute-289.html〕〔http://www.genderacrossborders.com/2011/06/21/cristi-hegranes-and-the-global-press-institute/〕〔http://www.forbes.com/sites/ashoka/2013/05/23/meet-new-ashoka-fellow-cristi-hegranes/〕
Previously, GPI trained women journalists, managed content-production and syndicated its stories to news outlets over the world. As of mid-July 2013, however, it underwent a brand segmentation whereby Global Press Institute focuses primarily on training. The organization created two new divisions--''Global Press Journal'' and Global Press News Service. ''Global Press Journal ''will oversee content-production and Global Press News Service will manage the organization’s paid-syndication platform.
==History==

GPI was founded in 2006 by Cristi Hegranes, a young American journalist. A year earlier, Hegranes had been working as a foreign correspondent in Nepal when she travelled to a rural eastern village. There, she decided to write a profile about the village matriarch, Pratima C.
While working with Pratima, Hegranes realized that despite her extensive Nepali network and Nepali language skills, she did not have the same insight as Pratima. Hegranes concluded that local women were better equipped to tell stories about their communities than she her because they had more cultural context and greater access to reliable sources.〔http://www.wbez.org/episode-segments/2011-06-09/global-activism-women-reporters-change-their-communities-87642?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+cpreducation+%28WBEZ+-+Education%29)〕
Hegranes identified the lack of a formal journalism education and access to a credible global platform as the main hurdles preventing local women like Pratima from becoming quality journalists. With this in mind, she founded Global Press Institute. In 2006 she administered the first GPI training in Chiapas, Mexico, where five women were trained in the principles and practice of traditional investigative journalism. The stories, which covered topics such as AIDS, poverty, clandestine abortion and community development, were the first that were published by the ''Global Press Journal''. Hegranes then established the second news desk in Nepal in 2007. GPI has since exhibited continual growth. As of 2013, it has trained and employed 135 journalists in 26 countries with expansion plans for at least ten more countries for 2014. GPI has also expanded its training curriculum to include photo and video journalism training.〔http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2011/05/3-non-profits-train-foreign-journalists-to-boost-global-coverage136〕〔http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/four_steps_to_a_new_online_fundraising_strategy/〕〔http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/Oakland-Magazine/July-2008/Empowerment/〕
